Thomas Hobbes
Thomas Hobbes witnessed the chaos of the 1640s English civil war and he thought that if people were left to their own devices, they would be constantly fighting against each other. He wrote a book with his ideas and called it 'Leviathan'. Thomas said that a life like that would be "nasty, brutish and short". He thought that people should give up their freedom and obey a ruler, and in return the ruler would ensure peace and order. Thomas Hobbes said that once people entered in this agreement that they would not be able to rebel even if the ruler was a tyrant.
